A former scout master who sexually abused seven boys who saw him as a role model has been jailed for 16 years.
Norman Thompson, 66, now of Belted Will Close, Wigton, abused the boys between 1984 and 2000, with the youngest being nine years old.
Carlisle Crown Court heard he had previously admitted 29 indecent assault charges and one charge of making indecent photographs of a child.
Judge Peter Davies called him “a disturbing and manipulative man”.
The court heard that Thompson’s victims saw him initially as a role model and “father figure”.
He won their trust and the trust of their parents by taking them on special trips and buying them alcohol.
‘Predatory paedophile’
It was on those trips to the Lake District and abroad that Thompson abused them, took pictures of them and showed them child pornography.
The prosecution described this as the “grooming behaviour of a predatory paedophile”.
Det Insp Ralph Henderson thanked the victims who had shown “great courage” coming forward.
He added: “Without their bravery in coming forward and speaking about these terrible offenses, Thompson would likely have never faced justice for his actions.
“Throughout the investigation he has shown a lack of remorse for his actions and the impact they have had on the lives of the men who endured the abuse.
“I hope Thompson’s victims will take some comfort in seeing the former scout leader being held accountable for his actions today.”
